Analysis Of Walt Whitman s This Compost - 1293 Words

Love in the Ground Walt Whitman’s poem â€Å"This Compost† utilizes incestuous allusions to communicate a mood of revulsion, that is at once wondering and terrified at the ability of Mother Earth and her humans to turn death and decaying forms into provisions for life. By forming an incsestous relationship with the natural world, Whitman displays his belief that a perverse relationship with the Earth is what yields the food that humans need to survive. Furthermore, he shows that human’s relationship to the Earth is unbounded by conventional morals like the taboo against incest. The speaker’s terror comes from the perverse, yet eternally loving relationship that other men seem to disregard with their need to waste and decay the natural gifts; given to them for their own industry and agriculture. The last stanza clearly displays the idea that the relationship between humans and the Earth is in one part maternal. One might argue that death is being celebrated in its ability to nurture the Earth s processes, but the speaker is wondering at the Earth’s ability to â€Å"grows such sweet things out of such corruptions† (42). It is the Earth who is committing the â€Å"Sweet† actions, and not the humans. We are shown overtly that the Earth is the provider for humans. â€Å"It gives such divine materials to men, and accepts such leavings from them at last† (48, 49) Men are shown to be insolent in what they give back to the Earth, with this lines references of the corpses that they leave behind

Why Do Ads Target Children Free Essays

Why do Ads Target Children? Have you ever been in an isle of a store and heard, but mom I really want this I saw it on television? This is a product of advertising. Since the late 1980’s children have emerged as a key demographic to marketers. Advertisements selling everything from the latest video game to the newest automobile are now targeted to the youth of our world. We will write a custom essay sample on Why Do Ads Target Children? or any similar topic only for you Order Now Children have buying power that sways their parents’ purchases, and they are the future consumer. Marketing to children is creating the children’s ability to nag a parent into purchases. Nagging or â€Å"Pester Power† is the most used strategy in the market today. The theory behind this is rather than going straight to the parent, give the child the buying power. Children are much more persuasive in the middle of a shopping trip than that commercial the parent heard two hours ago. Children often get their â€Å"wants† based on their persistence of needing a product. If someone asks you whether you want a Coke or Pepsi, you immediately know you’re being asked about a carbonated cola beverage — with distinct yet subtle differences between the two. Which ever brand you choose, Coke or Pepsi shows that somewhere along the line you developed a preference for that product. In Advertising it is called product loyalty. Marketers use Repetition of products children have no current use for such as a Ford Truck to build brand recognition in hopes that as an adult they will buy that Ford verses the Chevrolet. It also works with things such as Cake mixes. A child watches the Betty Crocker cake mix ad, nags the parent into buying and using the product. Then in turn buys the product as an adult based on their experience as a child. The Market has seen a new angle to encourage children to buy brand X over the competitor’s product. Many schools have lost funding due to our economic downfall. So advertisers such as Campbell’s soup have come up with campaigns such as â€Å"Labels for Education†. Basically you buy their product. Send in the label and earn stuff for your school. This gives both children and parents a creditable reason for buying the product. Corporations are also gaining access to advertise in public schools in exchange for materials. Frito Lay will sponsor events in schools in exchange for tagging their logo n flyers advertising the event. Children are easily influenced by things they see. Nine times out of ten a child will pick the cereal with Hannah Montana on the box over the box that she’s not on. Since the days of radio children have been introduced to the idea that if I want to be a star I should eat the same cereals that the stars’ eats. The use of role mode ls and celebrities to influence children is used everywhere. If it is meant for the use or consumption of a child you will most likely find a celebrity attached to it. On average there are three televisions and one computer in every home. So it is no wonder how advertising can reach so many children. Just a child sitting down to do some school researches can be inundated with hundreds of advertisements in an hour’s time. A half hour television special contains at the least 10 minutes of commercials. Just about everywhere you look someone is trying to sell something. Although, children have no direct income of their own we often overlook their buying power. In today’s busy world parents have tendency to buy more to satisfy their children. From candy bars to flat screens never underestimate the buying power of a whining child. How to cite Why Do Ads Target Children?, Papers

People - Management and Organization

Question: Discuss about thePeople, Management and Organization. Answer: Introduction Pluto Telecommunication is a telecom company, which was founded in 1930. This report analyses about the problem suffered by Pluto Telecommunication in its operations. Along with this, this report will provide some alternatives for the solution of that problem. It also provides recommendation to management regarding the selection of alternatives to surmount the problem going on in Pluto. Problem Identification Pluto Telecommunication is facing many of the problems, which directly affect its market share. Pluto Telecommunication has three different departments, which are Sales, Customer service and Marketing. The problem, which is faced by Pluto Telecommunication, is that these three departments do not work together. Along with this, these departments work in against of each other. This kind of behavior of these departments leads to loss to the organization. This unprofessional behavior by the departments leads to losing of new orders by the company. It also increases complaints from the existing customers. In addition to this, the marketing department of the company had launched many of the products. But this is done without giving any prior notice and training to other departments. This will directly affect the sales of company. Analysis of problem Pluto Telecommunication is suffering from many problems, which affects the structure of the company roughly. In this case, it is found that there is an unethical behavior followed by the different departments. The analysis of this case can be done on the basis of the SOGI model: Societal, Organization, Group and Individual. Analysis at Organizational level Organizational Culture Each Organization is a mixture of organization culture and organization structure. According to Cresswell et al (2014), in every organization, unitary culture is followed. Veronica Tsang also followed the same culture in the organization. But in Pluto, the three departments made their own working culture, which is distinct from the main culture of the organization. In addition to this, the subculture, which is created by the departments leads to miscommunication and it also acts as a hurdle in achieving the organizational goal. The employees of the company should be innovative and practical enough to deal with the outsiders. This innovation can be developed among employees by adopting unitary culture in the whole organization. But strong culture not guaranteed success of the organization. IBM has the powerful organizational culture but till suffered from losses. Organizational Structure In the view of Erhemjamts et al (2013), Organization structure defines allocation, coordination and controlling of the activities for achieving the main aim of the organization. Structure of Pluto follows proper departmentalization system. In departmentalization, there is a proper hierarchy to be followed. In Pluto, all the three departments (i.e. Sales, Customer service and Marketing) give their reports to Ms Tsang. These departments develop their own organization structure, which leads to miss communication in Pluto Telecommunication. Furthermore, the marketing department of the company had launched many of the products. But this is done without given any prior notice and training to other departments. These departments do not connect to each other, which may affect its working in significant way. The same problem is faced by Mr. Jeff Bezos (CEO Amazon). Analysis at Group level Group Structure Group structure in Pluto Telecommunication is distinct in different departments. Sales department follows intentional group features. On the other hand, customer service department follows bureaucratic structure and the marketing department has used structure of teamwork. Intentional group permits all the employees to participate in all the activities of the department (Vandichel et al 2015). The employees of the sales department work as individuals for achieving the goals, which leads to discords among them. Customer service department follows the proper bureaucracy in its working, which includes working under proper level of hierarchy (Onyekwelu et al 2015). This department works under a set of law, rules and regulations. This working style may struggle in new circumstances. Along with this, marketing department of the company focuses on the teamwork but the department fails to identify the proper level of structure. This failure also affects in the achievement of the goal of the o rganization. Group Culture Group culture of Pluto telecommunication differs according to change in department. The sales department follows the culture of rewards and recognition based on performance of employees. Rewards are conferred to employees benefits based on their performance in achievement of goal of department (Aguinis, 2013). In the customer service department, the style of working and authority is clearly defined, where the performance is tightly controlled by the head of the department. Due to this, it is not able to adopt the changes effectively. The employees of marketing department follow the same independent culture. This behavior of the employees affects the interdepartmental communications. In Pluto, this kind of the group culture is followed, which leads to disintegration in the organization. Analysis at Individual level Leadership Leadership plays a very vital role in the success of an organization. In Pluto Telecommunication, it is analyzed that Ms Tsangs leadership has failed to guide the employees of company in achievement of business goals. The above analysis has found that Ms Tsang feels that the entire departments heads criticize her work for the failure of the company. She feels that she is cornered by all the male directors of the company. In words of Peter Drucker, A leader is someone, who has followers. Ms Tsang should develop herself as a transformational leader to improve the condition in the company. She should transform her employees to work effectively and accurately. The similar situation is faced by Marissa Mayer (CEO, Yahoo). She has also failed to lead the organization effectively. Motivation In Pluto Telecommunication, different departments motivate their employees in different ways. In the sales department, the employees can gain the rewards by achieving their individual targets. For earning reward, employee works individually and which leads individual work rather than teamwork. But, payment of rewards to employees cannot motivate employees. In the customer service department, bonus system is applied to motivate the employees to work effectively. At a certain point of time, motivation of the employees is from fear of failure e.g. warnings. In marketing department, performance targets are not clearly defined. Due to this, some employees feels undervalued in the department. Theory of W. Edward Deming also states that paying rewards and benefits to employees do not properly motivate them. Alternatives After the Organization Structure Pluto Telecommunication can change its organization structure to dissolve the given problem. Pluto should launch itself in the market as a whole unit instead of personal grouping in the departments. This can increase working flexibility and accuracy in company. Pluto should develop coordination among employees of different departments through group assignments and meetings. Pluto can reengineer its structure in the way that creates dependency of departments on each other. This can create sense of obligation among all. After Company Reward System for Improving Motivation Reward system is helpful in short-term motivation, but it is not effective for long-term motivation among staff (Kerr, and Rifkin, 2013). The goals assigned to employees should be clear, and challenging but attainable. Pluto should change its reward system by applying the flexibility model in the reward system where the employees are given the reward according to their performance. In addition to this, Pluto should improve a wide variety of the reward system, which will help in removing the barrier of communication among departments. Conduct Regular Meetings Regular company meeting can be conducted in the organization to eradicate the gap between the departments of the organization. These meetings are necessary to review the quarterly progress of the departments. Meetings can be helpful in bridging up the communication gap between the departments. Regular company meetings will create a sense of urgency for each department to share departmental progress at the meeting. Regular meeting of departments will give the information about the departments, which will help the other departments in deciding their actions accordingly. Develop Involvement Culture Involvement culture is the culture, which focuses on the participation of the companys employees in different activities, contest, and decision-making ( boyd, D. 2014). Pluto needs to change its organization culture and to adopt the culture of involvement to achieve business goals.Ben Jerry's Homemade is one of the examples of the organization, which has successful adopted this culture. This will motivate the employees to work together towards the achievement of organizational goals rather than personal goals. Delegation of Power and Responsibility: Delegation of power and responsibility can increase the performance of employees. The Pluto telecommunication should use decentralized organizational structure, where the power to take discrete action and responsibility is delegated to proficient employees in the organization based on their performance. This will motivate other employees to work at best to get the higher position in the organization. The feeling of control over others is one of the ways for motivation among employees. Recommendation Pluto Telecommunication should conduct the regular meetings, as it is necessary to remove the communication gap among three departments. The meetings held will remove the communication gap and will help to track progress/performance of departments. This will also lead to harmony among the departments. In the long term, Pluto Telecommunication can transform its organization structure to improve its working. This change of the structure should be in the way to improve the flexibility and accuracy in the working of the company. Structural change can improve the sales of Pluto Telecommunication. Apart from this, the organization should adopt the involvement culture for timely achieving the organizational goals. In this culture, the groups should be given privilege to participate into decision-making of organization. Furthermore, Pluto Telecommunication should develop proper communication system in the organization. This will remove the communication gap and establish the coordination among the departments. Plan of Action The management shall need to develop agenda to call a meeting of the departments. There should be properly mentioned time, venue, date in notice of meeting. The notice needs to be prepared and sent to each department. While in reward system, the reward policy of company should be reviewed to diagnose need of possible change. Reward distribution policy can be improved through evaluation of best reward policy in industry. To change in organizational structure, first, prevailing structure of organization will be analyzed to determine the problem with this structure, and then possible remedies will be developed. The views of employees and upper management personnel can also be invited for this purpose. Conclusion From above report, it can be concluded that the main problem suffered by the Pluto telecommunication is the communication gap among departments. There are various alternative solutions that can be employed for solving this problem such as regular meeting of departments, change in organizational structure, delegation, and improving the reward system. Based on analysis of problem and alternative, regular meeting, improvement in reward system, and change in organizational structure are recommended to company to solve the problem. When It Rains It Pours Essays - When It Rains, It Pours, Shine

When It Rains It Pours As I sit here listening to it fall on my window sill I feel a shade of darkness come over me. I walk outside to feel it falling on me. As I life my face towards the heavens to feel it falling on me I have this dark feeling of dred. For me, rainy days and nights make me feel sad inside. I get depressed and want to stay in the house in bed. Whenever it rains I usually come downstairs and look out the window, only to see if my car is still in front of my door. As I stare at the sky, I think to myself, it's going to rain all day. But still, I thought, the sun could shine anyway, bringing with it the spring flowers that smell so lovely, the green grass, the blue sky, and the white clouds. Oh well, just a thought. I close my curtains and go back upstairs, I get back into bed and try to sleep. Sleep eludes me because I am thinking about things like life death, and money. It begins to pour and as the rain falls harder and hevier, I feel myself begining to fall asleep. Rain is like life, it comes and stays a while. Rain is like death, when it's time to stop it knows. Rain is also like money, when you have a lot of it, it pours. I dream of the day when the rain will go away, but until that day, I will listen to its drops on my window pane. Self Defeating Behaviours Essay Example

Self Defeating Behaviours Essay Example Self Defeating Behaviours Essay Self Defeating Behaviours Essay They go on to qualify this as Those who engage in a repetitive cycle of failed attempts to fulfill a core human need s range far and wide. For example, a child may be determined to gain attention through naughty behavior, initially this may be positive attention, later negative attention but attention all the same. Perhaps an adult avoiding work they are not looking forward to until it becomes an excessively stressful situation; proving to themselves that it was going to be stressful anyway. It may be someone in repeated abusive relationships or a sports professional who outperforms at home and underperformed in competition. It is, in away, a maladaptive coping strategy. In a positive sense, we would SE ego defense mechanisms to cope with certain situations. However, the mechanism is no longer effective when the outcome is negative for the individual. This cyclical process rotates around an expectation of a negative nature can be either sustained or worsen over time. Self-defeating behaviors ensure we fail to reach our goal(s). Perhaps we are scared to be successful or the process of change is more painful than the end result. Many self-defeating behaviors are managed perfectly well and may never need support of a counselor. Many may be simple unconscious efforts to ensure we gain the desired outcome (I. . Lateness to the interview of a job that doesnt appeal). However, a client may finally decide a change is required. The client may not perceive they themselves have an issue with their mindset or behavior. Mostly likely belief that an outside factor is causing an issue. Types of SOB Psychologists key to the research into Sads include Banister, Ocher and Burglars. The list of types of SUB are lengthy. However, Banister has outlined the some simple classes: Primary Self-Destruction This group includes individuals who intentionally choose an action that will bring harm to themselves. Masochism forms part of this group. De-railing activities may include self-harm, eating disorders, addiction and attempted suicide. Its important to note that anyone falling into this group is referred to their GPO for their primary care plan. [Psychosis. Com -? Self-Defeating Behavior] Trade-off Also known as Self-Handicapping. Creating a balance where in causing harm whilst seeing a beneficial output. Ultimately, the cost outweighs the gain. Most obvious involving health; over-eating, drinking, smoking. Less obvious may be avoidance; such as work or social interaction. A major player in this area is procrastination. Anyone falling into this group may or may not be aware of this trade-off. They do not intend to cause harm to themselves, believing negative affects are long in the future or change is too costly. (Banister) The advantage of giving yourself a handicap is that you can have the illusion of success without having to risk losing it. (Burglars, 1987) Counterpart active Strategies Has no intention of causing any harm to themselves, aiming for a positive outcome. Perhaps a misjudgment in capability or situation. Behaviors formed over time that may have originally been successful. The behavior becomes an automatic thought or response to a situation even if it gains a negative outcome. Choking under pressure is an example. Require careful handling as awareness of performance challenges can further exacerbate self-esteem issues that caused the SUB originally. (Banister) Treatment Models The two models we are looking auto treat are: H. I. N. D. S. I. T. E Honesty, Identification, New Choices, Intervene, Decision, Select, Transition and Empower T. I. M. E Temporal, I ntervene, Multi-modal, Empathetic Using both these models for treatment plans, it becomes clear that both are relevant. Using HINDSIGHT without considering a multimedia approach or originating issue seems unrealistic. Similarly, using TIME without considering the clients honesty or empowerment also seemed unrealistic. Additionally, the subject matter is not an end to end process but more a cycle. Recognizing a first time fix may not often happen, Ive merged the models into one cyclical model (below). The model considers that there may need to be reassessment at any time given a change of information, model, tool and level of success. It is not meant to signify a constant cycle of solution/ resolution, but rather recognize the journey. Figure 1: HINDSIGHT and TIME Models from Chrysalis Courses. Z Fosters interpretation. Within each of the sections, the counselor needs to make a choice appropriate to the client. Maybe starting with ACT to support open conversation; understand client goals, history, values, beliefs, rationale for change and so forth. Equally, psychoanalysis may be used if the issue clearly has roots in the development. Perhaps a Thought Record to identify patterns of behavior ready for the next discussion. However, an easily bored client may need such exploration done during a counseling session as recording issues may feel back facing and counterproductive. Modality may be key; they may like to draw a picture instead of writing a diary. The models above give a path to follow, a guide. Eke many paths; it will not always be a straight line, it may be that the client and counselor need to stop and check their direction or backtrack to take another path. The methods used will always need to reflect the individual. Whilst it can by cyclical, it must not remain so, intervention and challenge to help the client look to their ultimate goal. Some Considerations during Treatment Expectations of the Client Regardless of whether the client is feeling wronged or on a journey to change a belief, expectation is part of the discussion. Honesty is key, but also understanding what can and cannot be influenced. The Circle of Influence can be a useful tool. It can be discussed or printed, depending on modality and retained for reassessment. Here is a version below: Source: Z Fosters interpretation of Circle of Influence The worry tree HTTPS://bridegrooms. Files. Wordiness. Com/2014/07/worrywart. Ping Relapse and Cost of Change -behavioral change is superficial if not accompanied by an alteration Of perception and increase in social interest. Dryden) A challenge in changing any SUB is the price a client pays for change versus the true benefit gained. Behavior can turn into a habit based on a long standing belief system. The client will find it easier to take the well worn path, defaulting to the familiar. Stress or tiredness may exacerbate this. Similarly fear, anger, frustration. The counselor also needs to understand the knock on effect of change to family, friends and colleagues. Understanding the root cause of feelings and how these are restricting change are key. The counselor needs to help the client be open to identifying conflicts when hey arise; understand them and looking to manage them. The two models outlined in HINDSIGHT and TIME both clearly show this journey; demonstrating that there may not be one, but several ways to address a problem. Going through a process of exploration may reveal the best option for the client. I say may, as I?s equally likely that the client does not want to effect a positive outcome and may want to prove that the process will not succeed in support of the SUB. Emotional Desegregation Supporting awareness of where you can/cant ethically treat a client. This scale refers to: an emotional response that is poorly modulated, and does to fall within the conventionally accepted range of emotive response [Wisped Emotional Desegregation] Those who cannot regulate their emotions; in particular strong outbursts or physical aggression may need additional support via the GPO. It may be symptomatic of disorder(s), chronic maltreatment or brain injury. If in doubt the counselor must always take advice from their supervisor. External Factors Obvious factors may include alcohol, drugs, smoking, abusive or unhealthy relationships. Perhaps the clients living circumstances are difficult or dire. Perhaps dealing with a seriously ill loved one or supporting someone dealing tit any of the above. Addiction may be to gambling or even technology; a person may be disconnected from the world around them, but believe they are fully involved using social media. If a client has been abused or raped, caution is required as to how much past can be delved into and how soon they are willing to share. Painful memories may require the counselor to primarily focus on future goal and change in behavior. When looking to make changes to an SUB that has sustained someone, albeit negatively, these factors need active consideration. As always, supervision is key. SUB Relationship to Theory Whilst many theories may be used as part of TIME or HINDSIGHT, here are some connecting thoughts. Not an exhaustive list as there are many tools and theories: Transactional Analysis: Mode in support of SUB (I. E. , parental mode, perhaps moral superiority over being wronged). Psychoanalysis: Relating back to an unresolved crisis at a key period. Not just related to childhood, includes adult crisis (I. . , a failed marriage leading to fear of rejection). Personality: Fundamental personality of a client (I. E. Cognitive may be more self-aware of behaviors; sensory may test how change goes for them and what results hey SEE or FEEL). Client Centered: Understanding past history, opening up discussion, create trust and empathy. May be less effective to instigate change itself. Cognitive: Limiting or damaging beliefs. Clients generally believe the harming factor to be external, but discover during counseling that actually they need to change all or part of a belief. Behavioral: Conditioning of an individual. (I. E. , the perfectionist may have come from parental conditioning). Includes Fight/Flight/Freeze conditioning (amazedly changes). CB and similar: Culmination of above; tools and theory that can be used to instructively build a way forward for the client. Also consider ACT to change conditioned response. REBUT in particular came up as a strong framework for Sods. SUB Relationship to Intervention Validation/Challenge:Asking the client to explain the reasoning behind their beliefs this may need to be cyclical to dive down to the originating belief. Reflection:Repeating what the client has said to help them see their approach in a mirror and develop discussion around its validity. Rehearsal: Recreating a situation where a situation that involves the SUB is created to help understand its process for discussion. Could be utilized with Guided Imagery or Role Play below when looking to make changes. Guided Imagery:Cognitive behavioral technique shown to be effective in helping individuals learn to modify behaviors. In particular, working through the outcome of a changed goal. [Encyclopedia of Mental Disorders] Story-boarding: A step forward from the guided imagery above. A visual story of situation. Role-Play: Allowing the client a safe environment in which to practice any changes and allowing the client/therapist to test methods that may challenge any change. Conditioning: Several methods including placing the client in a situation fully flooding) or progressively. Also reward or punish through changes (this last one not deemed to be a strong method). Thought Record: Understanding when, where, who, feelings, hot thoughts, values. In order to reflect, understand and discuss options. Materials: TO support a clients consideration of belief, challenges and changes. Poems, stories (both real and fictional), even online materials for those who prefer, such as happily. Com This list is certainly not exhaustive and at the risk of sounding like a broken record, approaches would have a regular check and balance via supervision o define the most beneficial approach for any given aspect of the treatment. Conclusions If refer to a quote at the start of this paper may be vulnerable to mental health difficulties such as depression, anxiety, social isolation, or compensatory exterminating problems (Browns and Hartley) in relation to Sibs. Couple this with a quote from a McKinney paper Changing individual behavior is increasingly at the heart of healthcare. The old model of healthcare -? a reactive system that treats acute illnesses after the fact -? is evolving to one more centered on patients, prevention, and the ongoing management of chronic conditions. (Dixon-File) What are the wider social implications of self-defeating behaviors? Modern society with it benefits and comfort also brings with it an ill; expectations, excess, treatment of one another resulting in maladaptive coping strategies. Such stresses can lead to ill health or even mental disorders over time. Of course, an SUB may also simply be a symptom of a disorder. Gaps have to be to broad shoulders of the T in terms of knowledge. Perhaps the INS requires a training system to consider the broader information from a patient and avoid repeated referrals to different specialists? How would the health service do this? A GPO may see that a patients physical symptoms and/ or stress may be exacerbated by a behavioral issue. Review by specialists to decide upon a holistic approach that may include a mental health specialist such as counseling. Still even if talking therapy is identified, the client/patient needs to want to make a change. Take social avoidance as an example. Low self-esteem and/or personal experiences may have led to a maladaptive coping strategy. This may carry with it secondary issues around lack of exercise, eating habits, and self- dedication or more seriously self-harm. History and originating factors may include conditioning developmental crisis or a specific trauma. They could be under great pressure from relatives/friends to resolve the issue or even conversely supporting the belief that this avoidance will not change. Understanding the reason a client wants to change, the originating cause(s), emotions, beliefs; the counselor and client may then look at understanding an ideal goal/outcome. The therapist may need to consider CB/ACT/REBUT and tools such as a worry tree or goal ladder to help the client find a route forward. Role-play to create a safe environment in which to test scenarios and of course expectation setting that there will be positive and negative experiences whilst the best path is found. Nothing is perfect, but what the above thought process shows is that for any given SUB, there could be many causes, factors and results. The treatment of any SUB brings together all the models we have learnt and key intervention skills to be used. It is also important to remember we can only deal with what the client presents us. It may be that a client is struggling with a task because they have been asked to do something beyond their means rather than they are sabotaging themselves. One can only challenge and reflect with the help their client to consider their statements and honesty. Finally, feel a health warning is again required; a counselor has a great deal of influence once they have understood a client and are entrusted to help with change. The client will want direction. The counselor must be mindful of the clients desires, whilst we will challenge a client, we must not lead them by our own compass but instead support them in finding their own way.

Spanish Words Meaning Half

Spanish Words Meaning Half The English word half can be translated to Spanish in several ways, depending on, among other things, what part of speech it is used as. Medio (Adjective) Medio is used as an adjective, and as such it agrees with the noun it refers to in number and gender. Examples El edificio ocupa una media manzana. (The building occupies half a block.) Contiene sà ³lo 103 calorà as por media taza. (It has only 103 calories per half-cup.)Es medio hombre, medio vampiro. (Hes half man, half vampire.) Pasaban las horas y las medias horas tambià ©n. (The hours passed, and so did the half-hours.) In some cases, the noun that medio (or one of its variations) refers to can be omitted. Examples Hay tres clases semanales de una hora y media. (There are three weekly classes of an hour and a half.) Necesito una cuchara y media de azà ºcar. (I need a spoonful and a half of sugar.) Medio (Adverb) Medio also is used as an adverb, usually referring to adjectives. In standard Spanish, it is invariable, not changing in number or gender with the adjective it refers to. (In some areas, it is not unusual in spoken Spanish to change the form of medio to agree with the adjective, but such use is considered substandard.) Examples  ¿No ser una de esas mujeres medio locas? (You wouldnt be one of those half-crazy women?) Siempre te veo medio borracho. (I always see you half-drunk.) La tarea est medio hecha.
